Dr. N.R.Ramesh, Dy.Director General & Head, Mission-IIB (Coal) GSI, Kolkata is a Gold Medallist from Bangalore Univ. (M.Sc Geol.1975) & a doctorate in Science. He is an accomplished professional geologist backed by over 35 yrs. of distinguished service in GSI (except 2 yrs on deputation to Science & Tech. Dept.), of which over 25 yrs of practical experience in conducting independent projects on geological mapping and mineral exploration (Gold, placer & industrial minerals, coal), geol. research, teaching& training.

Dr. Ramesh has developed expertise in Geological mapping, Remote sensing, image processing, site characterisations: environmental geology, Quaternary geology, water pollution, disaster management, landslide studies, EIA, EMP & neotectonic studies in various capacities of a field geologist to supervisory, management grade in executing and guiding different national and international(UNESCO IGCP) projects and dissemination of knowledge through his many research publications, print media & invited lectures in geological research. Dr.Ramesh is currently associated as Coordinator under UNESCO-IGCP Project-581 on Evolution of Asian River Systems during the Quaternary period. He is a recipient of the coveted National Mineral Award of Govt. of India (1992-93) for his significant and seminal contributions in Quaternary geology and environmental geosciences of NE India and coastal tracts of Andhra Pradesh. He has successfully conducted number of consultancy projects on Remote Sensing, Mineral exploration, disaster mitigation, hazard zonation, rehabilitation studies, environmental engineering and coastal geoengineering projects funded by State and Central agencies. During his postings in different regions/ States of India (9 yrs in NER), he has extensively mapped and studied complex geological terrains namely, Himalayas, Indo-Gangetic Plains, southern peninsular India and the coastal tracts and conducted many field investigations leading to significant geoscientific and mineral discoveries, new finds and first records-thus contributing immensely to the cause of Indian geosciences. He conducted projects on urban related pollution and drought prone rural areas, mining belt degradation and cyclone/flood related hazards, land-water management. Dr. Ramesh has done advanced courses in remote sensing, image processing, computer applications, geophysical methods and GIS. As core faculty of GSI TI, he has conceptualised, designed and executedtraining programmes on disaster management for ISRO & DST. using modern methods, techniques and tools including high-end softwares (ERDAS ver.9). He has authored many national & international publications (>45 nos) of repute including the much acclaimed GSI Memoir Vol. 133 (2010) based on his persistent researches on east coast. Apart from high quality Technical Reports (20), he has rendered a book review on Terrain Analyses. He has attended many national seminars(Co-chairman, keynote speaker, rapporteur) and international symposia (50) and also visiting expert faculty in many universities (4), and GSI TI for the various Courses sponsored by DST, DOS, UGC, GSI and in public professional forum. He was working group member in several national and International Committees viz: IGCP projects (No.218,449, 554). He is in the editorial Board of Indian Jour of Geosciences, GSI, Kolkata and a refereefor many reputed journals eg. Jr. of Geol. Society of India, Current Science, Jr. of Earth Science, etc. He participated in the meetings at MoM, Delhi as GSI’s nominee on “Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) for the Indian Mining Sector” chaired by Secretary to govt .of India. He delivered expert lectures and conducted interactive sessions on “Environmental Impact of Mining and its Mitigation Measures” during Disaster Management Training programmes, organized by Admin. Trng.Instt., Mysore. Besides, Dr.Ramesh is also experienced in office administration as Head of Office and RTI matters as PIO and has conducted RTI training Course. He has undergone“30th Workshop on Technical Administration and Management” for JAG level officers of GSI in Sept.2009 GSI TI, Hyderabad and 2 weeks Management Course on “GMP for GSI Managers” at Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, New Delhi in 2010.
